Scouting Report:

Smith has a lot of potential because of his great athletic ability but I have questions about his hands and route running.

Positives: Has solid size and incredible speed. He is a very legitimate deep threat and he will be able to stretch any defense whether he is in the slot or on the outside in the NFL. Shows consistent ability to get behind coverages and make big plays as a receiver. Has solid hands and shows impressive quickness to gain yardage after the catch on screens and can make a guy miss in the open field. Adjusts to the ball well and shows some ability as a blocker.

Negatives: He tends to body catch and his hands aren’t very reliable which concerns me. He has incredible athletic ability but he isn’t that polished as a receiver. I think he needs to work on his route running even though he has great speed and burst to create separation. Because of that he hasn’t needed to run crisp routes which will hinder his transition to the NFL in my opinion. He will need to improve his hands and route running to reach his potential that he has because of his incredible speed.

Overall: Smith has a lot of potential because of his athletic ability but he is a boom/bust prospect in my opinion because either he will improve his hands and route running and become a dynamic threat at the receiver position or he will not consistently create separation and make plays in the NFL because he doesn’t work on his hands. I am not a big fan of prospects like that, and that makes me wary of Torrey Smith as a prospect even though he has a lot of potential.

Projection: 2nd round. He will probably go in the top 40-45 pick range but that will have a lot to do with his speed and potential rather than being a fundamentally sound receiver. He will be one of those guys that either breaks out and becomes a quality receiver after year three or he ends up being a bust.
