Positives: Has solid size and very impressive speed and quickness. He will be a very good vertical threat in the NFL because his acceleration and straight line speed are very impressive. Young has good hands and can make diving catches and adjusts to the ball well in the air, also tracks the ball well when he threatens defenses deep. He has the speed and quickness to make people miss in the open field and does a good job of finding a seam to run through when he has the ball in his hands as a receiver or as a kick returner. He has good vision and when he finds room to run he has the speed to break the play wide open and take it the distance. He runs pretty good routes thanks to his great burst and quickness.
Negatives: He is a smaller guy and needs to add weight to his frame because I have questions about his long term durability and I don’t think he will be able to go over the middle consistently in the NFL at his current size. He will body catch at times, especially in traffic, and could stand to improve his concentration to make sure he doesn’t drop catchable passes. There are some questions about his maturity and attitude and he has been arrested previously. He also doesn’t seem to have great balance as a runner and that will make it hard for him to consistently beat jams at the line of scrimmage as well as absorb contact when running after the catch.
Overall: Young has a lot of big play ability as a receiver and as a return man, he just needs to be more consistent with his concentration, especially in traffic. It will be interesting to see how hard he works to improve as a NFL receiver because if he is mature and has a good work ethic he could be a very dangerous slot receiver in the NFL. But if he doesn’t work hard then he will be just an impressive athlete with good speed who only contributes intermittently as a #3 or #4 wide receiver. I think he has good potential to have a consistent impact as a receiver but he has some things he needs to work in order for that to happen.
Projection: 3rd round. For a while he was being talked up as a first or second round pick but I have maintained that I thought he was a 3rd rounder for a while now. He has definite ability but he isn’t that well rounded and I don’t think he will be that effective playing as an outside receiver. However, in the 3rd round picking up a guy with his deep speed and play-making ability is a good value.
