Positives: Has above average size, arm strength and accuracy. Has two years of starting experience in a pro style offense and is very comfortable throwing off of play action. Can make some NFL throws and has average zip on those passes. His mechanics are pretty sound and he has alright footwork, is comfortable going through his drops from under center and turns and finds his primary read quickly after play action. Has matured over his two years as a starter and will check down when he doesn’t see anything downfield. Showed some ability to come through in pressure situations like on 3rd and long when Wisconsin was expected to struggle because of their heavy reliance on their running game.
Negatives: Not much of an athlete and he has limited upside. His arm is not a NFL caliber arm and he will struggle to make tough throws like deep outs against NFL athletes in the secondary. His accuracy is solid but it is nothing special, and he doesn’t have much mobility to extend plays or get yardage with his feet. He provided a relatively stable quarterback for Wisconsin but he was surrounded by plenty of talent and was not asked to do much except convert 3rd and longs and hand the ball off to Wisconsin’s talented running backs. He won’t pick up much yardage with his legs and he won’t extend a ton of plays with his feet, and I am not sure he has a great feel for the pocket. I’m also not sure how well he does in the face of pressure, and he might not be as effective in the face of consistent pressure as he regularly had above average pass blocking from Wisconsin’s talented offensive front. He also has a bit of a hitch in his throwing motion which warrants tweaking, I noticed that when watching him practice during the East-West Shrine Game.
Overall: Tolzien had a solid career at Wisconsin but he wasn’t really anything special. His arm strength is average at best, his accuracy is solid, the zip he has on his passes is average, his production was average and his upside is very limited. He might be able to stick as a #3 in the NFL but I don’t think he will ever be a reliable #2 on a NFL roster.
Projection: Undrafted. He might be drafted in the very late portion of the 7th but because of his limited upside there’s not much reason to pick him at all. I think he might end up in the CFL, but he should get invites to training camp at least where he will have a chance to make a team’s practice squad.
