Positives: Has solid size, athletic ability, arm strength and accuracy. Shows a solid feel for the pocket and has good enough footwork and feel for pressure to step up and buy more time in the pocket. Does a nice job extending plays with the mobility he has and is a threat to pick up yardage with his legs if nothing is open. Has starting experience in a pro style offense which will help his transition to the NFL. Has enough arm strength that he can make most of the throws that he is asked to, and has enough accuracy to be a competent passer.
Negatives: Riley doesn’t impressive accuracy and his arm strength is lacking for a NFL QB. His deep passes are often short which forces his receivers to come back to the ball, and he will miss high regularly when making routine throws. He struggles to throw on the move without setting his feet and does not deal with pressure well when it is in his face. He tends to hold onto the ball too long in the pocket after he buys more time by stepping up and does not have a good interior clock that should tell him when the ball has to come out. His decision making doesn’t impress me and I don’t think his intangibles are anything special either, so I don’t think they make him a draft-able prospect.
Overall: Riley has some ability, but his arm strength and accuracy leave so much to be desired that I don’t think he has a future in the NFL. I could see him ending up in the CFL, but under no circumstances would I expect him to get drafted this year even in this awful quarterback class. Perhaps he will get signed as an undrafted free agent just to see if he can stick on a practice squad, but I’d be surprised if he even managed that. Despite his solid production and starting experience there just isn’t any upside to his game and I don’t think he will improve much even with quality NFL coaching. He is what he is at this point, and that is a relatively unimpressive quarterback prospect.
Projection: Undrafted. As I said above, I could see him ending up in the CFL or maybe the AFL or UFL and having some success, but I don’t think he will have any in the NFL.
